{Live Laugh Photograph} Basic Camera Knowledge

In this series, I want to help those non-professionals feel a bit more at ease with their cameras. We shoot photographs everyday as moms, dads, heck, just as human beings, so shouldn't we understand what we're doing? Yes, most digital cameras out there automatically adjust to conditions and they do a pretty good job at it- but if you are looking to improve your skills or turn your images into more than just snapshots, then this might be a good read for you!

First, I figured it might be fun to address some questions I've received along my journey as a photographer. I have lots of friends who own not only digital cameras, but SLR's and needless to say, they come with as many questions as they do buttons! If you work them right, they'll be good to you, so let's start with the basics:

What is a shutter? An aperture?
The short answer is it's the way your camera sees the light and how it knows how much of that light to let in the lens. Shutter is how long the lens will open to expose the sensor "film" to the light. It's the number that reads something like 60, 80, or 200.
Higher number = faster shutter = little blur.
Lower number = slower shutter = lots of blur
*You really don't want to shoot lower than 60 without a tripod. The number corresponds to parts of a second. (i.e- 1/60 of a second, 1/200 of a second...)

Aperture is how wide your lens opens to to let light in. You will notice on the front or side of your lens is a number similar to 3.5, 4, or 5.6. This is the largest your lens can open up to.
Smaller number = larger aperture = more light let in
Larger number = smaller aperture = less light let in
Still with me? Great! You get this down, you got it! Lower lighting situations call for slower shutters and larger apertures, for example, 1/60 @ 2.8. The opposite for outdoors and wherever light is plentiful.

What is an f.stop?
Another word for aperture- see, this is easy!

What is ISO?
Again, light exposure. Photography is all about how long to let light burn onto your sensor or film. That's why exposure is soooo important to us pros. Get it wrong and it's hard to fix! On a nice, super sunny day, you want to set your ISO around 150 or 200. It makes the camera less sensitive to light. In dark rooms, bump it up to 500 or 800 to make it more sensitive. The only problem with this is noise. Noise is what we refer to as "junk" in the photograph. It looks like colored pixels in dark areas. 400 is a good starting point and works for most situations. Changing ISO can help you from having to choose a slow shutter speed.

There are many, many more aspects of good photography
which I'm hoping to cover in the coming weeks- how to find light, composition,
point of view, and focal lengths.

These are the just basics of understanding how to take an everyday photograph. There is a lot more to it for the pros to know when to change settings, when to bend the rules, and what works best for each situation. Remember, practice makes perfect!
Got a specific question? No problem- ask away!

{Wyatt} 6 months | Gwinnett Baby Photographer

This handsome little dude is 6 months already! Another "Grow Up" baby, he came
to see me in my new studio and as always, did an awesome job! After a few studio setups,
we headed outside where, despite the fact that it's February, we fought a harsh sun
and 70+ temps!
Always a pleasure to see this mom and her cuties!

{Addison} One Year | Gwinnett County Child Photographer

One of my favorite kiddos came to see me this past week for her final "Grow Up" session.
I can't believe she's already one, but I enjoyed watching her and her family grow! When it comes to walking, this little cutie is a pro- and she loved to go the exact opposite way I went! So great to have you guys back!

{Anslee} 6 months | Gwinnett County Baby Photographer

This little doll came in sporting the cutest smile and pinch-worthy cheeks!
She was the runner-up for the Halloween costume contest in November, but we decided to save her prize for when she hit the six month mark- and I'm glad we did! I love this age so much and was so excited to have Anslee be my first studio session!
Thanks Mom for bringing her to see me!

{Super Fans}

When I met my husband around 10 years ago, I remember that his family was very into college football. Every Saturday, there was someone to watch- Dad is a Bama fan, Mom is for Auburn, and brother attending Georgia, was a die hard Dawg. There was a friendly rivalry between family members, but it was all in good fun.
Then there was my family. When it comes to sports, we don't mess around with college. In fact, growing up, I was taught to loathe the Dawgs. We are an NFL breed. From September to February (hopefully!), my kin eats, sleeps, and breathes Black and Gold. We trash talk. We get loud. We get angry. It gets personal and it can get ugly- but I LOVE it! So you can imagine the insanity that was my parents house this past Sunday. And although we weren't named national champs, our six Super Bowl rings say otherwise!

Southerners can have their college ball- Northerns prefer the big leagues! ;)

{Studio Preview} | Gwinnett County Child Photographer

My dream of owning a studio has finally been realized- even if it is just a
bedroom in my home!
My reluctant 3 year old was my guinea pig, but what an adorable model! :)

I love the light that pours in from the south facing windows. It fills the whole room!

I can't wait to shoot newborns and little 'uns here. I'm even thinking maternity will work
beautifully here! Goes to show that you don't need anything huge or fancy to get the job done!

{Welcome Aboard!}

So I finally joined the ranks of other pro photographers and started my own blog. And while I am not the greatest writer in the world, I did feel like this might be a better forum for interacting with my clients and potential clients ;)
I adore reading "my" blogs and am teetering on "stalker status" for more than a few! I love seeing what other photographers do and what they're like. It's my morning inspiration!
Not only will I be featuring my awesome sessions, but also some how-to's, secrets to great photographs, and some other fun stuff! I also want you to get to know me as a person, not just as a photographer.

I have some fun new things in store for 2011!

We'll open the blog with my newest product of 2011- the Canvas Gallery Wrap

This is my own personal 16x20 hanging on my wall:

These are my new favorite way of displaying images! Your print's emulsion is bonded to the canvas, then wrapped around a 2 in. wooden frame and coated with a protective laminate.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!
